Description for 2025/26

The Implementing Evidence into Practice module builds on content introduced in Year 1 of the MSci Physiotherapy programme and enables you to explore the stages involved in producing a Critically Appraised Topic (CAT).
You will have the opportunity to develop critical appraisal skills and use of critical appraisal tools for qualitative and quantitative studies, effectiveness studies, diagnostics studies, systematic reviews and clinical guidelines enabling them to implement evidence into practice.
The module aims to introduce the concept of evidence-based practitioners and methods of using evidence in practice -creating clinical questions whilst also developing transferable skills (such as critical appraisal and academic writing) that can be applied in a variety of healthcare settings and specialties.

Aims
The module aims to:
- develop understanding of the role of evidence in health care practice.
- develop the selection and implementation strategies for gathering and evaluating evidence.
- analyse the quality and application of evidence to the health care arena.
- develop an understanding of the attributes desired in a valuable team member and receive feedback on their own team working performance.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Poster weighted 80%
Produce a Critically Appraised Topic (CAT) in poster format. Small group work (approx. 4-6 students)
Students will create and submit a Critically Appraised Topic (CAT) in poster format as a small group (approx 4-6 students). The group will present the poster to the examiner with an up to 15 minute narrative which will be followed by examiner questioning to the group (between 5 and 10 minutes in duration equating to a total assessment time of 25 minutes). The students' knowledge and skills related to answering a specific applied or clinical question using research evidence and presenting an answer (i.e. a clinical bottom line) will be explored. Each group member will be required to answer at least one question. Each student needs to contribute to the project and present.

2: Essay weighted 20%
500 word Individual essay: Reflection on students' own effectiveness as a group member
Students will complete a concise reflection on their own contribution to the effectiveness of the group project. They will choose a specific attribute of a valuable team member which is supported by research, and reflect on their contribution to the group project in relation to this attribute.
