Description for 2025/26

The Practice in Specific Populations module builds on content introduced in Year 1 of the MSci Physiotherapy programme and enables you to assess and manage patients in specific populations (such as end of life, paediatrics, intensive care, falls) through clinical reasoning and formulation of a problem list.
You will have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required to utilise therapeutic assessment and treatment techniques, to manage patients in specific populations.
The module aims to prepare you to work in diverse healthcare settings whilst also developing transferable skills (such as problem solving, multidisciplinary team roles, care, empathy) that can be applied in a variety of healthcare settings and specialities.

Aims
This module aims to:
Explore the contribution of physiotherapy in the management of specific populations, within the context of health and social care.
Enable students to transfer knowledge and skills in assessment and therapeutic management to specific populations.

Study hours

40 tutor led hours which include:

Description of Module Assessment

1: Group Assessment weighted 70%
Presentation
Students in their small group (4-6 students) will be required to present on interpretation of the physiotherapy assessment findings and treatment plan with their therapeutic effects and mention other MDT involvement required with justifications for a given patient population. The presentation will consist of 20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes of questions.

2: Exam weighted 30%
Computer Task
Computer Task: The students will be required to complete a computer task under assessment condition. The computer task will involve answering 20 multiple choice questions in 40 minutes.
