Description for 2026/27

The Physiotherapy Practice Cardiovascular Respiratory module builds on content introduced in Year 1 of the MSci Physiotherapy programme and enables you to manage common cardiovascular respiratory conditions through clinical reasoning and formulation of a problem list.
You will have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required support the prioritisation of physiotherapy management for cardiovascular and respiratory patients and apply principles and practice for sputum clearance, improvement of lung volume, respiratory failure, breathlessness and early mobilisation.
The module aims to prepare you to work in specific cardiovascular respiratory settings whilst also developing transferable skills (such as prioritisation and problem solving) that can be applied in a variety of healthcare settings and specialities.

To build on underpinning theory, knowledge and skills to enable the student to begin to clinically reason and manage patients effectively with common cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Objective Structured Skills & Clinical Examination weighted 50%
Practical Skills OSCE
Students participate in 3 practical skills in a 'lane' of randomly selected skills which have been taught within the module. For each skill, the students get 2 minutes of thinking time with a task sheet and then have 5 minutes to complete the practical skill. This OSCE is designed to be inclusive in relation to ET. On completion of the final station the student will act as a model for the following student. Staff will be allocated a single skill to assess for each student, therefore students will be assessed by 3 staff members. Each station will be awarded 33.3% of the mark allocation and a total will be generated.

2: Class Test weighted 50%
40 minute multiple choice assessment
Students will have a 40 minute closed book exam consisting of 20-25 multiple choice questions. This will be on a different day from the practical assessment. This element of the assessment will assess the students ability to identify appropriate treatments based on patient presentation, recognise safety issues and demonstrate knowledge of underpinning pathophysiology. This assessment will use a computer lab. A time limited assessment is appropriate as this offers authenticity regarding clinical practice and ensures integrity in the assessment. The assessment will be automatically marked and students awarded a quantitative mark for this element of the assessment.
