Description for 2025/26

The module introduces you to the concept of health and wellbeing with a focus on primary prevention and health promotion. The module reflects the shifting emphasis away from a medical disease model towards a health model based on personal responsibility and prevention of disease.

Aims
This module aims to introduce students to the concept of health and wellbeing, to explore common determinants of health, to explore the role of primary prevention and health promotion in the context of health and wellbeing and to equip students with the theoretical principles that underpin common health promotion interventions for themselves and the service users and carers.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Apply basic principles of health promotion to the design of content for an electronic resource targeting a relevant health priority: 1
Describe the psychological, physiological, and socio-economic factors that impact health and wellbeing, with reference to themselves or that of service users/ carers: 2
Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of a holistic approach to the promotion of health and wellbeing with reference to psychological and physiological factors: 2

1: Group Assessment weighted 75%
The production of a health and wellbeing promotional resource
In small groups (approximately 4-6) learners will create an electronic health and wellbeing promotion resource for themselves, service users or carers.

2: Workbook weighted 25%
Individual Workbook
An individually completed workbook to include no more than 5 short answer questions based on a seen case study
