Description for 2023/24

The focus of this module is to explore the issues related to key relationships in a child's life and how this may relate to children's social development. As well as highlighting the importance of these relationships you will learn about how psychological knowledge can be applied to support healthy relationships in children. Indicative content may include issues relating to children's relationships with caregivers, siblings, peers and teachers and also with imaginary friends or media personalities.

Aims
This module aims to increase students' understanding of children's social development and the importance of key relationships in a child's life. As well as studying theoretical perspectives, the module will highlight how research on children's relationships can be successfully conducted.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Essay weighted 70%
Critique and synthesis
Students will be asked to write a 3000 word critique and synthesis regarding a particular aspect of children's relationships. They choose a topic guided and agreed by the tutor. The essay should include an overview of theory and a critical discussion of existing work.

2: Presentation weighted 30%
Presentation
Students will work individually to produce a 10 minute presentation (plus 5 mins for questions) which outlines an intervention relevant to children's relationships. The topic should be different to that covered in assessment 1. The presentation should include an introduction/rationale, a proposed method and a proposed evaluation plan. The presentations will be followed by questions and feedback on the proposed intervention from the audience.
