The Practicum Part 1 module focuses on helping you develop the practical skills, the theoretical understanding of practice issues, the personal and professional qualities and attributes, the self awareness and the experience on placement necessary to become a qualified counsellor.

Intended Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate key person-centred therapeutic skills in counselling practice, and an ability to manage the therapeutic process: 1,2,3Demonstrate understanding of safe and ethical practice in line with the BACP's Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions: 1,2,3Demonstrate the ability to build a relationship characterised by the 6 Necessary and Sufficient conditions: 1,2,3Identify, critically evaluate and reflect on person-centred counselling theory, and how this has been applied in practice: 22Critically reflect on issues of prejudice, oppression, difference and diversity and how these might impact on client, counsellor and the therapeutic relationship:
70 hours in-situ contact time, comprising work in small skills group which includes: observed skills practice; formative feedback on practice; teaching input on and discussion of/reflection on professional and practice issues. The time in small skills group will vary week to week over semesters 1 and 2 of the programme.50 hours of private study, comprising carrying out skills practice sessions with peers, and preparation for/writing up of evaluation assignment; plus a minimum 4 hours of clinical supervision, and 10 hours of evidenced personal therapy.30 hours of supervised practice
