Description for 2024/25

This module is designed to develop your understanding of research methodology. A range of research methods will be introduced and explored through a mix of teaching input, discussion and hands on activities. This will assist you in constructing an appropriate research design for your MSc research dissertation. Prior to submitting the research proposal, you will have the opportunity to present your research plan to peers and research supervisors, and will respond to questions and reflect on feedback to take this forward into the next phase of your research.

Aims
The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to a range of research methods/methodologies and to assist students in constructing an appropriate research design for their MSc research dissertation.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a critical understanding of empirical research methodologies used to explore key issues in counselling and psychotherapy: Synthesise the key literature which will form part of your study and/or justify your approach to your literature review ¿ whichever is more appropriate for your chosen methodology: 1
Evidence the rationale for your proposed study, how this sits within the current field of counselling research, and how it relates to therapeutic practice: 1
Illustrate how their proposed research may contribute to knowledge in the counselling professions and how it applies to practice: 1
Integrate the BACP Ethical Guidelines for Research in the Counselling Professions into the design: 1

Study hours

70 in-situ contact time, made up of 14 x 5 hour weekly sessions
80 hours preparing ethics application, assessment and private study
