Description for 2023/24

This module will introduce you to the ways in which person-centred counselling theory is applied within a therapeutic context. You will learn about counselling processes, for work with individuals about ethical, practice and therapeutic issues in counselling. You will also learn about some examples of the contexts in which counselling occurs, from experienced counselling practitioners. Your learning will be underpinned by a combination of lecture-style classes and discussion-focused seminars, alongside independent study. The learning you gain in this module will prepare you for subsequent modules in the BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling programme, in which you will focus on your own skills and personal development.

Aims
Students will be introduced to the principles underpinning the application of person-centred counselling theory, studied in PSY-20041, to the practice of counselling in a therapeutic context. This will provide them with a good foundation for level 6 counselling-focused modules within the BSc Psychology with Counselling programme, in which they start to work in a more applied and practical way.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Reflective Diary weighted 30%
Reflective diary
Students will be asked to keep a reflective diary throughout the course, in which they will keep track of their developing understanding of person-centred counselling theory, with reference to personal experiences and/or the literature and research, where relevant. Students will submit two entries from this diary (500 - 750 words each), written at pre-defined points in the course, which demonstrate their growing understanding of person-centred counselling theory. At least one entry must demonstrate the student's ability to use theory to discuss an aspect of their learning about themselves. They may choose to discuss how person-centred theory might explain aspects of a personal experience or some aspect of their self-understanding. Support for the assessment will be provided during taught sessions on the module.

2: Essay weighted 70%
Evaluation of Practice
A 2000-word essay in which students will evaluate a recorded counselling session, between a therapist and a client, using person-centred counselling theory, as well discuss as any ethical issues/principles that need to be considered. The recorded session will be one that is available in the public domain. Support with the assessment will be provided during teaching sessions on the module.
