How do psychologists explore the complexities of human behavior? What methods do we use to measure and analyze the world around us? In this introductory module, you’ll take your first steps into the fascinating world of psychological research, learning how both qualitative and quantitative methods are used to investigate human thought, behavior, and experience. This module will guide you through the essential skills of research design, data collection, and analysis, allowing you to explore philosophical and ethical considerations in research, while gaining hands-on experience. Whether you’re analyzing patterns in behavior through statistical methods or exploring human experience through interviews and qualitative data, you’ll build a foundation in both approaches. In a mix of interactive bite-size sessions and practical labs, you’ll develop the ability to create effective research questions, select appropriate methods, and apply your knowledge to real-world psychological research. By the end of the module, you will have a solid grounding in designing, conducting, and analyzing psychological research using both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
Aims
This module will introduce students to both qualitative and quantitative research methods for psychology. This will include the philosophical underpinnings of qualitative and quantitative design, as well as data collection, data analysis, and report writing. Students will have a combination of in-person and asynchronous active learning, complemented by weekly 2-hour practical labs. The labs are applied in nature and the students will get a deeper understanding of how qualitative and quantitative research works (e.g. developing appropriate research questions, application of ethics in different contexts, collecting, preparing, and analysing different types of data).

Description of Module Assessment
1: Open Book Assessment weighted 10%4 x Multiple Choice ExamsStudents will complete 4 online multiple-choice tests throughout the module. Each test will assess key foundational knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Tests will be made available for one week, with a 60-minute completion timer. This structure provides students with opportunities to engage with core concepts regularly and consolidate their learning progressively. Each Test will consist of 20 Questions.
2: Research Proposal weighted 40%Qualitative Ethics ApplicationStudents will submit a 1500-word ethics application for a qualitative research study. The application includes:
A rationale for the research question.
The philosophical foundation of the study.
Ethical considerations.
The proposed data collection method.
A brief outline of the analysis approach (covered in more depth in Year 2).
Students will receive formative feedback on an initial draft and engage in peer review during the module. This structured approach ensures students develop the necessary skills and understanding for designing ethical research.
3: Research Report weighted 40%Quantitative Research ReportStudents will work in groups to devise, prepare and collect data on a research project from a choice of 'stakeholders'. There will be five stakeholders to choose from each on a differing topic requiring different analyses and considering different forms of evidence. Once data collection is complete students write up their full 1500 word report individually.
4: Research Participation weighted 10%Research Participation TimeStudents will either:
Complete 600 minutes of research participation across both semesters, gaining insight into a variety of psychological research methods and designs from the participant's perspective.
Submit a 2,000-word reflective essay discussing the ethical and methodological considerations of research participation and its role in psychological research.
Participation will be recorded via an online system, with a final status of pass or fail awarded based on completion. The essay will be assessed using a pass/fail rubric focusing on the depth of reflection and understanding demonstrated.
