Description for 2025/26

This module has been designed to develop leadership knowledge, skills, qualities and behaviours for student paramedics and seeks to develop, nurture and enhance existing team working skills and clinical leadership requirements. Leadership theories and models are appraised and applied to the clinician's work context, with the aim of improving their leadership potential and abilities to lead and deliver high-quality health care in their field of practice, with a focus on the service user experience.

Aims
To demonstrate a critical appreciation of the evidence base supporting effective clinical leadership in paramedic practice;
To examine how effective leadership can influence paramedic service provision;
To develop the student's own leadership skills.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Critically examine the links between leadership, effective teamworking, and how these may enhance the quality of healthcare delivery in paramedic practice.: 2
Critically evaluate and discuss a range of leadership and management theories relating to the impact of organisational vision, values and structure on effective leadership in paramedic practice.: 2
Critically reflect upon their own role, values and leadership behaviours within a team, applying these to areas of potential development and initiatives to foster leadership potential in paramedic practice.: 2
Demonstrate awareness and critical discussion of the political and professional influences for and upon change in healthcare and the impact upon leadership and developing a quality service, within the context of paramedic practice.: 1

Study hours

A blended learning strategy of:
15 hrs face-to-face teaching (13 hours lecturer contact teaching and learning, and assessment, and 2 hours tutorial)
10 hours group work
50 hrs directed study related to module content
75 hrs self-directed study and assessment preparation

Description of Module Assessment

1: Presentation weighted 30%
25 minute presentation (including 5 minutes for questions)
25 minute (including 5 minutes for questions) presentation on organisational change and leadership theory and the impact of quality in service delivery. You are expected to present to peers and x2 tutors. The presentation will also be recorded for internal and external moderation to ensure fairness and consistency. Students will able to choose a range of presentation methods (e.g. PowerPoint, Prezi)

2: Essay weighted 70%
2500-word written assignment
The student will draw on supporting evidence to demonstrate their achievement of the learning outcomes. Critical application of the concept of leadership and how individuals and organisations can use this to convey their values and vision, within contemporary social / health care commissioning and delivery will be demonstrated. Critical reflection upon, and demonstration of the student's own leadership behaviours, potential and ability to lead on an aspect/s of practice to improve health care will be illustrated via a reflective analysis.
