Description for 2023/24

This is an optional module on the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (distance learning) programme. The module will support the learner in developing as a clinical teacher through reflection. The learner will be required to undertake a number of reflective activities during the module, and provide a written commentary on their personal development.

Aims
This module aims to support learners in their development as clinical teachers through reflection. Learners will explore the foundations and theoretical underpinnings of reflection before utilising various reflective frameworks to structure their reflective writing. Learners will use peer feedback, student feedback, and theory to inform their reflective accounts.

Talis Aspire Reading List
Any reading lists will be provided by the start of the course.

Critically evaluate their own teaching including use of feedback from learners and peers to develop appropriate approaches, use of technologies, methods and theory: 2,3
Identify and reflect on learning needs that emerge through experience and generate plans to meet learning needs: 1,2,3
Apply reflective models derived from the literature to structure their reflective accounts: 1,2,3
Support observations and reflections through citing appropriate literature, theories, and concepts drawn from a range of sources: 1,2,3
Demonstrate reflection for action through analysis of teaching encounters: 1,2,3

Study hours

This module will be delivered as a distance learning module therefore the total required hours will be 150 independent study hours as they work through the module content and learner activities.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Reflective Analysis weighted 0%
Written reflections on teaching encounters
Two written reflections on memorable teaching encounters in which the students were learners: one on a particularly positive encounter and one on a particularly negative encounter. Students should identify what factors led to the success or failure of the teaching within these encounters and discuss how they will use this learning to inform their future teaching practice. Maximum word count: 1500 words in total across both reflections.

2: Reflective Analysis weighted 0%
Written reflections on peer observation of teaching
Two written reflections on peer observation of teaching: one in which the student was observed and one in which the student was the observer. Completed peer observation of teaching proformas should be submitted as appendices. Students should identify the strengths and weaknesses of the teaching within these encounters and discuss how they will use this learning to inform their future teaching practice. Maximum word count: 1500 words in total across both reflections.

3: Assignment weighted 100%
Reflective commentary on development as a clinical teacher
In this assignment learners should describe the justification for using reflection to develop as a clinical teacher before providing a commentary of how they have developed through reflection over the duration of the module. They should refer to the reflective accounts submitted during the module to describe how these have contributed to their overall development. Further supplementary reflective accounts may be submitted as appendices. Maximum word count: 2000 words.
