The Enhanced Paramedic Practice module provides you with in-depth knowledge and comprehensive, critical understanding of the scope of contemporary paramedic practice. Clinical skills, simulation and multidisciplinary team working are central to the module, therefore, you will be afforded the opportunity to learn alongside a range of other health professions and medical students from across the wider School and Faculty. Assessment requirements for the module are designed to measure your ability to provide holistic care to a diverse range of patient groups. Students who successfully complete this module will be able to apply a range of techniques and skills for the management of a range of patients in unscheduled, urgent, and emergency care in a range of settings.
Aims
This module aims to further students knowledge, and develop a comprehensive and critical understanding of the scope of paramedic practice. Skills of enhanced patient assessment and management, across maternity, neonatal and paediatric patient groups will be covered. Enhanced clinical skills and invasive procedures for paramedic practice including their practical applications with the above patient groups are integral to meeting the intended learning outcomes for the module. Students who successfully complete this module will be able to apply a range of techniques and skills for the management of a range of patients in unscheduled, urgent, and emergency care in both the out-of-hospital and in-hospital settings. Content linked to the Royal College of Paramedic Curriculum Guidance (RCoP, 2024), the Health and Care Professions Council Standards of Proficiency for Paramedic (HCPC, 2023) and QAA Subject Benchmark Statement Paramedics (QAA, 2019)

Intended Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate a systematic understanding of contemporary paramedic practice by applying theories, concepts and principles to inform patient-centred care for a diverse range of service users in urgent, emergency, and other care settings: 2Critically analyse the principles of Information Governance (IG), legislation, protocols and guidelines and their application to the sharing of patient data and records.: 1Demonstrate a systematic and evidence-informed approach to the assessment, management, and treatment of conditions affecting paediatric patients: 2Critically evaluate individual roles, responsibilities and team dynamics within a multidisciplinary emergency care environment while demonstrating inclusive, non‑discriminatory and effective person‑centred care.: 1Critically analyse and interpret 12‑lead ECGs and cardiac rhythms to identify time‑critical cardiac events, and apply Resuscitation Council UK ALS algorithms to formulate evidence‑based clinical decisions and intervention plans appropriate to paramedic practice.: 3

Description of Module Assessment
1: Podcast weighted 40%Create two 15 minute podcasts (30m minutes in total)Create a 30 minute podcasts on pre-determined cases. Students must select 1 case from those provided. Cases will have a focus on multidisciplinary team roles working and the principles of information governance with the sharing of confidential information.
2: Objective Structured Skills & Clinical Examination weighted 60%Objective Structured Clinical Examination - 20 minutesA 20-minute OSCE in the format of a simulated patient encounter.
The practical examination is a summative OSCE in which students are required to:
Demonstrate a systematic and evidence-informed approach to the assessment, management, and treatment of conditions affecting paediatric patients.
Students will be provided with a 'list' of possible paediatric patient presentations at the start of the module, in which they may be assessed. The presentations will include time-critical medical illnesses or traumatic injuries. On the day of the assessment, students will 'blind select' one paediatric presentation and will be required to:
demonstrate safe, evidence‑based clinical decision‑making, timely assessment, interventions, and appropriate management regimes.
3: Exam weighted 0%1 hour ECG Written Exam1-hour ECG interpretation examination comprising 40 questions.
This is a professional examination as per the Royal College of Paramedics curriculum requirements. As per professional requirements, the pass mark is 75%.
