Description for 2025/26

This research dissertation completes your work on the MRes Health and Care and is an opportunity for you to combine your subject-specific interest with the theoretical and methodological knowledge gained during the MRes to develop and implement your own research project.
You will be assigned a personal supervisor who will meet with you regularly to discuss the process, content and progress of your research and dissertation.
The location for the project may be Keele campus, health or social care partners or with an industrial partner.

Aims
The aim is to allow students to plan, design and develop an independent health or social care research project in conjunction with guidance from a personal supervisor.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Search and critically evaluate literature to identify a relevant health or care problem and develop a credible research hypothesis or question/s.: 1,2
Plan, design and develop a research project under supervision, demonstrating a theoretical understanding of methodological approaches and an advanced level of analytical engagement with the data collected and in context of relevant literature.: 1,2
Critically engage with the relationships between knowledge, politics and power in the health and social care field, including socially embedded practices within research practices, ethical procedures, reflexivity and safety with application to their own research project.: 1,2,3
Communicate synthesis of the research process and findings both via written communication (dissertation, reports, and/or publication) and oral presentation.: 1,2
Reflect on their own research skills and identify personal and professional learning needs supporting lifelong learning.: 1,3

Study hours

Due to the dynamic nature of research programmes, this breakdown may be subject to alteration.
Active learning hours total 50 hours. Includes module launch = 4 hours and project supervision = 46 hours
Independent study: literature review, practical work, analysis of results, report writing, preparation of final dissertation and presentation = 1150 hours
