Description for 2025/26

This module focuses on the key nursing skills of appropriate clinical judgment and decision-making in nursing practice which are core to the role of the competent registered nurse. You will develop your knowledge of assessment tools to assist you in making safe judgements about people’s healthcare needs relevant to your field of nursing.

Aims
To enable you to demonstrate critical thinking, decision-making and team-working skills to manage and provide continuity of person-centred care in partnership with people with healthcare needs, their families and carers.
To support the development of your presentation skills.
To prepare you for the numeracy examination.

Breakdown of active learning hours:
In situ- 13.5hrs / Synchronous-13.5hrs (Lectures, discussion, seminars, tutorials, workshops, assessment preparation).
Asynchronous- 7hrs (Guided independent study including preparation for scheduled sessions, follow up work).

Description of Module Assessment

1: Presentation weighted 100%
A 20 minute presentation of a poster
You will present a poster about a scenario that you have encountered in clinical practice which demonstrates your clinical reasoning skills, which must be based on the Clinical Reasoning Cycle (Levett-Jones et al, 2009). The total presentation time is 20 minutes which will be pre-recorded for submission. You will be expected to critically analyse and provide a rationale for your decision-making and will utilise the framework of the Clinical Reasoning Cycle. You are to present your information using a presentation template. During the presentation, a rationale should be included for the clinical reasoning theories/models and frameworks used. You will demonstrate developing clinical reasoning skills.

2: Exam weighted 0%
An online numeracy examination
A 1 hour and 15 minutes online numeracy exam, with a focus on medicines management. This assessment will assess your ability to determine correct drug calculations in preparation for administration by testing you on calculations related to Tablets and Capsules Liquid medicines Injections IV infusions You are required to achieve 100% to pass this assessment to meet the NMC Standard 4.6 "all programmes include a health numeracy assessment related to nursing proficiencies and calculation of medicines which must be passed with a score of 100 percent” (NMC, 2023, p14)
