Aims
This module focuses on the evolving role of the midwife within the current context of society including an overview of specific vulnerable groups in society and explores the increased medicalisation of childbirth. There is a focus upon the art and science of midwifery practice as depicted in the 21st century.

Intended Learning Outcomes

demonstrate knowledge of the role and scope of the midwife in the 21st Century, with regards to The NMC Code (2018) and other relevant legislation and frameworks considering the need for effective documentation: 1
discuss the need to work sensitively and inclusively and develop recognition for diversity and differences in approaches to care: 1
discuss factors which may impact women and their families including socio-cultural influences, health inequalities, human rights of women and newborn infants, including women¿s sexual and reproductive rights: 1
demonstrate awareness of the emotional context of midwifery for the woman and her family and the impact on the student midwife: 2
gather information and data from a range of resources including media and the arts, which influences current midwifery practice: 2
recognise professional and ethical implications that may arise in contemporaneous midwifery practice and the impact on the woman, her family and the health professional team: 2

Breakdown of scheduled teaching hours:

Description of Module Assessment

1: Essay weighted 50%
Discussion Paper
The student is required to discuss one issue, exploring the impact upon midwifery practice. The issue the student chooses should be explicitly linked to the perinatal period and/or the evolving role of the midwife. Word count 2,500

2: Project weighted 50%
Artistic depictions through the childbearing continuum project
Following participating within a formative midwifery art exhibition, the student will write a 1,500 reflective essay. The student will provide a brief rationale for their choice of project. As part of this essay they will reflect on the representation of midwifery within their chosen art project whilst considering the potential implications for social, cultural and political context of midwifery in relation to their project.
