Description for 2019/20

This module is designed for students with no previous experience of British Sign Language (BSL), and who wish to gain basic BSL skills and deaf awareness.
Come along and meet our tutor on Monday 30th September 2019 between 12.00-3.00pm in Room CBB0.001.

Students studying on our BSL modules may have the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification with Signature Level 1 award in British Sign Language. If you would like to find out more about this, including costs please contact Andy Rowe on a.rowe@keele.ac.uk.

Aims
This module aims to give students an understanding of the principles of British Sign Language (BSL), and the ability to use and understand basic BSL.

Intended Learning Outcomes

understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL: be able to fingerspell in BSL: 2

demonstrate an awareness of deaf culture and BSL language development: 1

School Rules

This module is for students who do not have any previous experience in BSL. Language Centre approval required.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Portfolio weighted 40%
Learner Journal
Learner Journal of approximately 800 words including a contrastive language analysis

2: Oral Exam weighted 60%
Exam in receptive and productive skills
Students will complete a 3-5 minute productive and receptive test, and answer questions from the examiner.
