Description for 2022/23

This module is an opportunity for students to explore in depth a particular topic or problem in mathematics chosen from a list prepared by the staff. Each student is supervised by a member of staff throughout the execution of the project. This project is carried out between September and May. There are many different subject areas available. The work is assessed by means of a dissertation and a poster presentation.

Aims
The aim of this module is to provide students with an opportunity to study a particular topic or problem in mathematics or statistics in depth and to report on it orally and in writing.

General aptitude (assessed by a formal interview and recommendations from their personal tutor, year tutors and/or programme director).

Description of Module Assessment

1: Dissertation weighted 70%
Equivalent to approximately 4000 words
A written mathematical report on an agreed area of mathematics produced using a mathematical typesetting package.

2: Poster Presentation weighted 30%
Production and presentation of a poster summarising the project
A professionally produced academic poster, presented to both their peers and staff. Students will be questioned on their poster.
