Many say sport and politics should not mix, however their relationship is deemed to close for a variety of factors, something that this module will focus upon. Students will learn about how different countries' governments engage with, and use, sport, assessing concepts such as soft power, nationalism, sportswashing. This will come together to understand the different approaches used by countries regarding the hosting of sports events, state sponsorship and how sport is used for development, whilst students will also focus on the governance of sports and how that differs by country and region.
Aims
This module aims to provide students with a detailed understanding of the role politics plays in sport and consider how sport is governed by those within the industry and by governments.
