Description for 2025/26

Are you interested in turning an idea into a real business? This module gives you the chance to explore what it takes to develop a new venture, from planning and strategy to communication and evaluation. You’ll learn how to identify opportunities, make key business decisions, and reflect on your own development as a potential entrepreneur. Working closely with an academic supervisor, you'll build your enterprise idea and present it as a professional business proposition. This module helps you develop valuable skills in leadership, critical thinking, communication, and self-awareness—skills that are relevant whether you want to start your own business or work in an innovative organisation.

Aims
This module aims to introduce students to the processes in new venture development. This will enable them to appreciate and develop skills required to create a new business venture and equip them with relevant and transferable employability skills.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Recognise and use the skills, resources and knowledge necessary to plan and develop a new business venture: 1,2
Demonstrate understanding of the barriers to start-up enterprise growth and success: 1,2
Effectively communicate the planned business venture orally and visually to a specialist and non specialist audience through the creation of a video presentation: 2

Description of Module Assessment

1: Report weighted 50%
Reflective Report
2000 word reflective report which critically evaluates the entrepreneurial activity which has taken place during the module. The report will demonstrate understanding of the challenges to entrepreneurial activity and students will be expected to reflect on their own entrepreneurial knowledge, skills and behaviour.

2: Presentation weighted 50%
15 minute video presentation
Create a 15 minute video presenting the enterprise idea as an investment proposition.
