Aims
The module aims to provide a detailed critical understanding of the theories and techniques underlying modern research into the aetiology, pathology, underlying mechanisms, prevention and treatment of human neurological disorders.
Intended Learning Outcomes
critically evaluate pathophysiology (cellular and molecular mechanisms) of common neurological, neurodegenerative, and neuropsychiatric disorders, which may include schizophrenia, Parkinson's Disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, meningitis, hydrocephalus, brain tumours (benign and malignant) and congenital disorders that affect the nervous system (e.g., Down's syndrome).: 1,2critically evaluate the research findings and advances made in precision diagnostics, prevention and therapeutic approaches.: 1,2critically evaluate the epidemiology of neuropathological disorders, and their impacts on society and healthcare systems.: 1,2master case-based learning, engaging with flipped classroom activities (oral science communications) and honing academic skills i.e., concise, evidence-based academic writing (short answers), critical thinking, and evidence-based academic essay writing.: 1,2
Active learning:11x3h engagement with asynchronous materials, lecture notes and supplementary materials11x2h tutorials3x1h technology enhanced workshops (Problem Based Learning)Independent study:92hours independent study and preparation of the (neuropathology) case study assessments
Description of Module Assessment
1: Assignment weighted 50%Case-Based Learning questionnaire (short answer questions)Students will critically evaluate a provided neuropathology case report and independently answer a set of questions consisting of a series of short answer questions (equivalent to approximately 1000-1200 words). These will assess students in applying their knowledge of topics covered in the module
2: Assignment weighted 50%Integrated academic essay (1000-1200 words)Students will be provided with topic titles mid semester and will choose ONE academic essay out of three to submit towards the end of the semester. Students must reflect on a neuropathological condition/case discussed throughout the academic semester and draw on other topics from across the module. Typical answers would be 1000-1200 words.
