Description for 2026/27

Students enter their first year at University with a wide range of abilities. Skills for Bioengineering is a core first year module that allows you to develop the required skillsets to be a successful graduate level scientist. The module provides a foundation in key areas that are built upon during the degree.
You will develop general skills required for effective scientific communication, the analysis of scientific literature, and the interpretation and presentation of scientific data. You will take part in a series of case-based learning tutorials, which not only provide a safe space to gain confidence in your communication skills but also allow you to learn to contextualise the materials you will learn throughout your degree. Additionally, you will develop self-learning, attention to detail, and team-work skills.
The module will use of combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials to support your understanding of the key topics.

Aims
This module will introduce essential study skills needed for students to become successful graduate level scientists. The module provides a foundation in key skill areas that are further built upon during the BSc Bioengineering (Regenerative Medicine) programme.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Essay weighted 40%
1,000 word essay
1,000 word essay. Students will research and present scientific information in the form of a scientific report. Emphasis will be placed on a clear writing style and structure, suitable for scientific communication. Students will choose from one of three subject areas relevant to the BSc Bioengineering (Regenerative Medicine) course, provided by the module lead. Covers teaching material from the first semester.

2: Poster weighted 20%
Poster presentation
Poster presentation to be held after the completion of semester one teaching. Subject area and associated dataset to be provided by the module lead. Students will be asked to analyse and present a basic dataset related to an area of bioengineering as part of the poster.

3: Report weighted 40%
Case Based Learning (CBL) Report
Students will select one of the three case-based learning scenarios studied across this module as the basis of their case report. The case report will consist of three sections. The first section will require the student to formulate their own intended learning outcomes. In the second they will present the research to address their ILOs. In the final section, they will reflect on how they approached this assessment and how they can further develop their independent research skills. This piece of assessment has a word count of 1,500 (excluding figures and tables).
