Description for 2022/23

A practical approach to the residential conveyancing transaction. Covering the key stages in a conveyancing process students will gain experience of drafting standard documentation. Students will run two client files replicating the stages of a real life transaction together with client queries and issues which commonly arise in practice. This will provide a foundation level of understanding of the conveyancing process and be helpful to students who wish to undertake future work as a paralegal, solicitor or CILEx especially in a conveyancing department.

This module is designed to provide students with a foundational level of knowledge in the legal practice of residential conveyancing. This builds on the core modules of Introduction to Property Law (Level 4) and The Law of Real Property (Level 5) but takes students in a different more practical direction and expects a higher level of analysis and greater degree of accuracy in their legal advice.
Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in client interviewing and legal drafting and research. It will enable students to recognise the key stages within a transaction and provide practical legal advice on client scenarios.
This module aims to examine areas of professional conduct which pervade legal practice and enable students to recognise those and act accordingly whether as a paralegal, solicitor or CILEx member.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Identify the relevant stages in a residential conveyancing transaction from the perspective of both buyer and seller: 1
Identify and explain professional conduct issues which may arise and act appropriately to maintain professional conduct standards: 1
Critically analyse a conveyancing contract package and if necessary draft appropriate requisitions and further enquiries whilst advising in plain English the importance of such enquiries to a lay client: 1
Explain and evaluate the drafting of standard conveyancing documentation and explain the key issues which arise: 1
