Despite the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union, European Union law remains of deep significance in the United Kingdom. Large parts of European Union law remain in force in the United Kingdom. European Union law also exerts significant influence in the United Kingdom due to the size of the European Union economy, with this influence being felt in areas as diverse as the regulation of football and manufacturing standards. Moreover, knowledge and understanding of European Union law assists students in becoming global citizens and in contextualising their knowledge of the English legal system. This module introduces key institutions, methods, and principles of European Union law, and looks at how power is defined, exercised, and distributed among European Union institutions and Member States. It explores different forms of regional integration (and disintegration) and considers the European Union’s evolution. The significance of European citizenship and the Internal Market are also introduced. The module will enable you to acquire detailed knowledge of substantive and procedural legal principles underpinning European Union law and to undertake independent legal research and use legal writing skills to solve key issues in European Union law. The module also engages with Brexit and the continuing relevance of European Union law in the United Kingdom.
