Description for 2025/26

The module will build on skills acquired in German 2 or equivalent (e.g. CEFR Level A1) and expand your vocabulary base and ability to interact in everyday situations in German. The topics covered in this module include orientation, eating and leisure, weather and holidays. You will consolidate and broaden your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in class, as well as practise your communicative skills.
Various aspects of contemporary life in the German-speaking world will be covered through class discussions, online resources, and audiovisual materials, offering insights into culture and customs. There will be a variety of tasks and exercises in class time, such as partner exercises, listening comprehension, role-play and reading and writing tasks. You will consolidate the skills acquired in class through further web-based self-study exercises.
The language level of this module corresponds to A1+ work leading to Level A2 in the European Common Framework for Languages (CEFR -A1+/A2)

Aims
This module builds on basic German language skills to further develop and consolidate students’ receptive (reading and listening), productive (speaking and writing) and interactive abilities in the target language. It also enhances understanding of German-speaking cultures and everyday communication, while encouraging the use of effective language learning strategies.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Recognise and understand familiar words, basic sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g. personal information, studies, hobbies, daily routine, etc.) when people speak slowly and clearly: 2,3
Understand, summarize and extract key information from simple written texts related to areas of immediate personal relevance: 1,2
Interact in simple, familiar situations, asking and answering simple questions related to a range of topics (family and friends, hobbies, education, work, etc.), being able to ask for repetition or clarification, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly: 3
Write simple notes, messages and short texts (e.g. personal letters or emails) related to areas of immediate personal relevance, making pertinent grammatical and lexical choices: 1,2
Recognise and use simple grammatical structures and rules in the target language and compare them to English: 1,2,3
Recognize and act upon basic cultural differences as encountered in everyday situations, demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in the German speaking world, and identify different registers and varieties of the language: 1,2,3

Students are only permitted to take one German language module per semester.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Class Test weighted 30%
Class Test
Students will complete an in-class test (maximum duration 45 minutes) to assess competence in receptive and productive skills. Tasks may include writing a short text in the target language, undertaking a dictation, translating a passage, or completing vocabulary and grammar exercises. All tasks will align with CEFR descriptors for language use at the relevant level.

2: Flexible Class Test weighted 20%
Flexible Online KLE Test
Students will complete a series of online exercises on the KLE platform (maximum duration 60 minutes) designed to assess reading comprehension, listening, grammar and vocabulary knowledge and writing skills in the target language. All tasks will align with CEFR descriptors for language use at the relevant level.

3: Speaking Assessment weighted 50%
Spoken interaction assessment
A 6-10 minute Spoken Interaction Assessment designed to assess learner’s competence in speaking (production), listening (reception) and conversation (interaction). Tasks may include a presentation, role play, or description of a visual or audiovisual prompt, followed by a question-and-answer section. Where assessments are conducted in pairs or groups, each student will be assessed individually and awarded separate marks.
