Description for 2026/27

Within this module students will explore the acute responses and chronic adaptations to exercise. This will include practical experience: conducting health screening; undertaking steady rate and incremental exercise testing; exploring metabolic cost using breath by breath expired gas analysis and finger-prick blood collection, and analysis to explore responses to exercise and adaptations to training.

Aims
The module will take the student from the fundamental physiology knowledge acquired at L4 in Principles of Systems Physiology, to the application and assessment of such systems in sport and exercise scenarios.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Evaluate the acute responses and chronic adaptations to exercise in the cardiorespiratory or neuromuscular systems.: 1
Measure cardiorespiratory and neuromuscular parameters in a laboratory environment.: 1
Describe and explain the acute responses, to steady rate and incremental exercise.: 1
Differentiate between metabolic pathways utilised during rest and exercise.: 2
Interpret and present data generated in laboratory practicals.: 2

Study hours

Active learning includes:
- 30 hours of teaching via class-based seminars and lab-based practical
- 10 hours of directed assessment preparation
- 10 hours of asynchronous directed study
100 hours of independent study by the student:
- 80 hours self-directed study
- 5 hours self-study (e.g. developing competencies with relevant software);
- 15 hours of assessment preparation
