Description for 2025/26

The module introduces exercise testing and assessment of physical activity and fitness within healthy populations; with a strong focus on building communication skills relevant for professionals post graduation. The module also provides you with an insight into practicalities of exercise prescription and applied practice of patient management in an exercise setting, using relevant research to inform your approach.
You will attain the CIMSPA recognised external qualification in gym instruction, increasing employability opportunities.

Aims
This module aims to introduce students to the principles and assessments of health, physical activity and fitness across a healthy population. Utilising a blended learning approach and external body qualifications, students will explore and develop the applied practice skills and attributes required to work in a public sector.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Introduce and interpret measures of health at rest and pre-activity screening, to determine contraindications, precautions and adaptations to participate in an exercise test.: 1,3
Perform and interpret measures of aerobic power, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and body composition.: 1,2,3
Identify and apply pre-exercise screening assessments.
: 1,2
Deliver a safe and effective exercise programme, in line with external body guidelines.
: 2,3
Competently perform exercise instruction and prescription encompassing warm up, strength training, aerobic endurance, flexibility and cool down.: 2,3
Communicate effectively to participants / clients when coaching or performing testing procedures.: 1,2,3
Integrate measures of physical activity and fitness, into an overall health profile.: 1

Study hours

Active learning includes:
- 70 hours of practical teaching to included delivery of external body exercise awards, learning to be completed via lectures, practical workshops and tutorials.
~33 hours of teaching via classroom and seminars
- 30 hours of directed study
Independent study includes:
- 100 hours development of assessment (inc. 30 mins practical assessment),
- 100 hours self directed study.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Assignment weighted 60%
Collection, interpretation and feedback of data
Students are required to generate a data informed client report (1000 words). Students are expected to demonstrate data interpretation skills, including reference to appropriate normative values and relevant literature.

2: Practice Based Assessment weighted 0%
Delivering a Gym Session
Small groups (2-3 students) are to deliver a gym based exercise programme inline with the requirements for the CIMSPA gym instructor qualification. Students will be given details in the previous lecture to build a programme based on a set client, they will then deliver a programme on an individual demonstrating how they would deliver the exercise prescription components. CIMSPA programme endorsement states that students are required to pass this practical component in order to be awarded the external linked award, hence the pass/fail component.

3: Laboratory Practicals weighted 40%
30 minute practical exam assessment
A 30-minute interactive practical assessment. In small groups (e.g. 2-3 students), students are required to conduct a series of randomly allocated fitness test (or part thereof) and then individually answer questions on the science associated with the application and interpretation of the test data, and their role in building a health profile and associated client guidance.
