Description for 2023/24

This module facilitates acquisition by the students of knowledge of current research in the subject matter of their year 4 research project, and to evaluate the outcome of the project in relation to other work in the field.
The emphasis of this module is to carry out a thorough searching and synthesis of the published literature available in the area of the research being conducted, and to be able to relate their own research to that of others carrying out work in similar fields.

Aims
To acquire knowledge of current research in the subject matter of the year 4 MGeology research project, and to evaluate the outcome of the project in relation to other work in the field.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Conduct an extensive survey of the research literature in the subject matter of the project, using electronic and other resources.: 1

Communicate, in a good standard of English, the background and context of the project in the form of a literature synthesis section of the project report.: 1

Study hours

24 hours tutorials/supervision meetings. 126 hours searching and synthesis of existing literature/publications and engaging with external talks/seminars.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Literature Review weighted 80%
PROJECT LITERATURE REVIEW - 3000 WORDS
Literature synthesis report that represents an extended introduction to the MGeology project thesis

2: Individual Report weighted 20%
1500 word report based on external talks on research at the forefront of the discipline.
Research participation by members of the Level 7 MGeology class will be assessed by production of a 1500-word review report on any one external talk/seminar (of their choosing) on research at the forefront of the discipline. This review will be due at the end of Semester 2.
