Media is a global industry and today's professional needs to be able to operate in a variety of forms of communication. This module will allow students to develop the linguistic skills necessary to engage in the working environment of a media professional. This module will allow students to develop and improve communication skills and the specific vocabulary uses in media. There will be particular emphasis on the language used in the fields of print media, advertising, television, film and new media. This module is open only to students with a non-British educational background, or by prior arrangement with the module tutor.
Aims
This module aims to develop the communication and language skills necessary for a professional career in the world of media. It prepares graduates to use the language of the print media, advertising, television, film and new media.

This module is available only to non-native English speaking students who have previously taken an English Language module provided by the Language Centre.Available only to students registered on MCC and / or Film Studies or at the discretion of the module leader. Undergraduate students are allowed to take only one ENL module per academic year unless agreed with ELU programme director.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Portfolio weighted 60%PortfolioStudents will prepare three 500 word writing tasks based on the content delivered in the module. These include:
1) writing a 500 word piece in the style of a particular medium covered in the module
2) a genre analysis of one medium covered in the module
3) a written text with an explanation for the style adopted
2: Coursework weighted 30%Group ProjectIn groups of two or three, students will choose one aspect of the module and prepare a 10-15 minute presentation which utilises the language covered on the module. Each student is expected to present.
3: Computer Task weighted 10%Vocabulary exercisesStudents will complete five on-line vocabulary tests
