Description for 2026/27

This module will develop your knowledge of key ideas about the creative processes behind the writing of original texts (poetry and prose). You will explore these processes, increase your understanding of the influences and sources that inspire new writing, and enhance your understanding of writers' workshops. Through the production of your own prose, poetry and critical analysis, the module will prepare you for the independent study project in the third year.

Aims
To introduce students to key ideas about the creative processes behind the writing of original texts (poetry and prose).
To enable students to explore the processes of writing original work.
To develop students' understanding of the influences and sources which inspire new writing.
To provide students with an enhanced understanding and experience of writers' workshops and the giving and receiving of critical feedback among peers.
To extend and enhance students' understanding of literary texts through the production of their own creative work.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Create original poems or prose pieces and be able to explain the decision-making process in terms of how they are constructed: 1,3

Demonstrate an understanding of the format, dynamics and purpose of the writers workshop by explaining the workshops' influence on their own writing.: 1,2

Description of Module Assessment

1: Portfolio weighted 60%
Portfolio
Portfolio of original writing. A range of written work - poetry and/or prose - by the student (nominal word count of 1500 words/6 -10 poems)

2: Assignment weighted 20%
Commentary on portfolio
Reflective commentary (1000 words) on the creative writing process, incorporating critical reflection on the Portfolio

3: Assignment weighted 20%
Worklog
A Work Log of between 1,000 - 2,000 words or 10 - 20 pages, charting the development of one piece of creative writing: format to be determined by student – scrap book, journal, writing diary or similar, but will contain notes and evidence of research and could include sketches, diagrams, photographs, notes, sketches, photos, research.
