Description for 2026/27

This module provides an advanced understanding of database techniques and current issues that are associated with database deployment.

Aims
To provide an advanced understanding of database techniques and current issues associated with database deployment.

Intended Learning Outcomes

demonstrate a detailed and coherent knowledge of distributed database concepts, applications and architectures including issues of interoperability between heterogeneous data systems and distributed legacy information systems: 1,2
critically evaluate the core features of advanced database models and technologies: 1,2
discuss the key data warehousing concepts, architecture, analytical processing techniques and data mining: 2
critically appraise the main research topics at the forefront of database systems and their applications: 1,2
deploy established techniques systematically for schema homogenisation, data integration, query optimisation, and transaction control in distributed retrieval and transaction processing: 2

Description of Module Assessment

1: Essay weighted 40%
An essay of approximately 2500 words
One essay of approximately 2500 words, on a subject selected from a set of research topics.

2: Exam weighted 60%
2-hour closed-book exam
The exam will cover all topics addressed in the lectures. This exam will have short-answer questions focusing on theoretical as well as problem-solving skills learned in the module. The exam will have three questions and candidates are asked to attempt all three questions.
