Description for 2026/27

This module introduces you to aspects of professionalism and ethics, communication, teamworking, and writing styles: these are also useful transferable skills in science and engineering more generally. The module provides you with important transitional skills that will be built upon in future modules and subsequent careers. The module provides guidance on enhancing employability skills, and advice on working in teams. Delivery of the module will include workshop activities providing you with opportunities to work individually or as part of a team, and involvement with careers and the library via guest lectures.

Aims
To enable students to understand the requirements of professional practice and to support them in the development of confidence and competence in a range of academic, professional, and teamwork skills for effective study and communication.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Group Assessment weighted 70%
Group Project
Using academic, professional, and communication skills, students will be asked to prepare a Group report. This will be the equivalent of a 3000-4000-word report. Students will work in groups of 2.

2: Report weighted 30%
Reflection
The student produces an individual portfolio (300-400 words) showcasing: 1. Reflection on the group project 2. Progress made each week 3. team members' contribution
