Description for 2025/26

Simulation has an increasing role in clinical education across a variety of professions as it addresses learning needs in a safe environment. Simulation-based education utilised replication of real-life scenarios to guide learning and facilitate skill development. Clinical educators who are engaged in simulation as an educational tool are required to have the knowledge and skills to deliver effective teaching. This module explores the theory that underpins simulation-based education, focussing on pedagogical principles, educational assessments, and integration of simulation into a clinical curriculum.

Aims
This module aims to:
• Explore the process of designing and delivering simulation-based education
• Guide learners in how to write an effective simulation scenario
• Explore the roles within a simulation faculty and how they contribute to effective delivery
• Develop feedback and debriefing skills specific to simulation-based education
• Explore the concept of ‘educational needs assessment’ and how this can be used in the design of a simulation-based educational activity or curriculum
• Explore how simulation can be used in different professions and specialities in healthcare

Intended Learning Outcomes

Design and critique a simulation-based exercise relevant to your education and/or clinical context: 1,2
Critically appraise the current technologies and modalities used in simulation in clinical education: 1,2
Evaluate the role of debriefing and feedback in simulation in clinical education: 1,2
Create an educational needs assessment for a learner to inform the design and delivery of a simulation-based exercise in a learning environment: 1,2

Study hours

Asynchronous learning 30 hours
Conference style presentations 5 hours
-Independent learning (reading and assessment preparation) 115

School Rules

This module can be taken as a stand alone module for CPD purposes

Description of Module Assessment

1: Poster weighted 40%
Academic Poster
Design a Simulation based educational activity in your own area of interest in clinical education. Create an academic poster outlining and justifying your design referring to the educational theory and literature relating to the design of your simulation activity

2: Presentation weighted 60%
Presentation
Present your academic poster in a 15- minute conference style presentation in a virtual conference format. During this you will be asked questions by two tutors about your simulation based educational activity design.
