Description for 2025/26

This module explores the theory that underpins simulation-based education use in clinical education. It will focus on pedagogical principles, educational assessments, and integration of simulation into a clinical curriculum.

Aims
This module aims to:
• Explore the pedagogical basis of simulation-based education and the current evidence base.
• Appraise the use of simulation as both a teaching and assessment tool in clinical education
• Develop critical appraisal skills

Intended Learning Outcomes

Analyse and distinguish the relevant learning theories that inform simulation-based education: 1
Critically appraise the evidence for the use of simulation in clinical education: 1
Justify the use of ‘fidelity’ in simulation and its impact on teaching and learning: 1
Reflect and assess the use of simulation-based education in enhancing safe practice in your healthcare setting: 1

3000 word critical evaluation of evidence base for simulation-based education.
Critically appraise the role and impact of simulation based education on student learning within your own area of clinical practice. Discuss the pedagogical challenges and potential barriers to using simulation as a learning and assessment tool (3000 words)
