In this module you will independently study and have the opportunity to design and undertake an original research project, addressing a novel and important problem in clinical education. You will prepare your research report in a dissertation or in a journal style article suitable for publication in a peer reviewed journal. You will be supported to develop skills in research design, writing for publication, project management, and presenting. This will allow you to disseminate your findings at conferences and as a journal article.
Aims
This module aims to develop students ability to design and undertake an independent research project in clinical education.

Supervisor meetings: 30 hoursIndependent study incundertaking research field work and data analysis: 262 hours Preparing write up, including literature review, and editing : 300 hoursPresentation of research within the faculty up to 3 hours Attending faculty research events up to 5 hours
Students must have achieved 120 credits at level 7 before commencing. Full time students such as Intercalating medical students will be exempt from this prerequisite.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Dissertation weighted 100%Research projectChoice of two submission formats
Either
A 15000 word dissertation with a clinical education focus. Using appropriate formats including literature review, methodology, critical analysis and discussion of key issues and recommendations for improving clinical education practice. Copy of ethical approval will be part of the appendix if applicable
OR
Portfolio of evidence of preparing an article in the style for publication
- Written report in the format of an article for publication, detailing the research findings and a letter to the editor with evidence of ethical approval (if applicable) (5000 words) -60% weighting
- Reflection on the research process of producing an article ready for publication (2000 words) - 20% weighting
- 20 minute presentation of research findings followed by Q&A - 20% weighting
