Description for 2025/26

This is a core module on the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education (distance learning) programme. This module will enable the student to interpret and build upon the theoretical frameworks that apply to learning, teaching and assessment and develop understanding in the areas that are relevant in medical education. The student will be required to construct a personal education portfolio to support their development as a clinical teacher in delivering effective clinical teaching and assessment within the clinical environment.

Aims

Intended Learning Outcomes

critically evaluate theories of learning and assess to what extent these inform teaching and assessment practice: 1
demonstrate practical application of effective planning and use of relevant teaching and assessment methods with reference to their subject area and to the level of the target audience: 1
critique the current assessment practices in health professional education and determine the role of assessments in driving and evaluating learning in health professional education: 1
critically evaluate approaches employed in developing a suite of assessments across a programme of study and how to facilitate the alignment of assessment items with intended curriculum outcomes: 1
compare and contrast approaches to feedback and identify the role of feedback in meeting the objectives of learning and assessment: 1
construct a professional development plan on how to embed educational theories of learning and assessment into own teaching practice: 1

Study hours

Online tutorials, individual activities linking with portfolio contents and group discussion to consolidate learning - 100 hours (asynchronous)
