Description for 2026/27

In this module, you will delve into the intricacies of the head, neck and upper limb through a range of teaching activities, including hands-on dissection of cadaveric material, lectures, and seminars. You will study anatomical structures in-depth, and develop the critical knowledge and skills required to excel in the anatomical sciences and its related disciplines.
In this module, you will develop the use of dissection techniques to explore the anatomy of the head, neck and upper limb, relate structure to function, and apply your knowledge to assess the clinical effects of variation and pathology.
This module will provide you with the complex knowledge, practical skills and ethical understanding that will underpin your further studies in the anatomical sciences.

Aims
This module aims to deepen students’ knowledge of the human body through comprehensive, hands-on dissection and detailed regional study. It aims to build on foundational knowledge acquired in previous modules, focussing on the complex anatomical structures of the head, neck and upper limb. The module aims to further develop the essential skills and insights required for students’ subsequent learning in the field of anatomy and its related disciplines.

Apply cadaveric dissection techniques to examine anatomical structures in the head, neck, and upper limb.: 1
Apply systems-based knowledge to the spatial relationships between structures located in the head, neck and upper limb regions.: 1
Compare and contrast the functional significance of anatomical structures in the head, neck and upper limb.: 1,2
Analyse the effects of anatomical variation and common pathologies of the head, neck and upper limb regions and evaluate the potential implications in relation to medical imaging.: 2

Description of Module Assessment

1: Viva weighted 60%
Practical Anatomy Vivas
Three x 15 minute practical examinations where students will be asked to identify and discuss key anatomical structures. The examinations will feature a mixture of prosected cadaveric material, including specimens dissected by the students. This will link forward to their Y3 anatomy module where they will produce and present a dissection. Students will have formative practical examinations at the end of each week's teaching in preparation. This will link with previous practical assessments from year 1. Students will receive feedback and support to allow them to identify gaps in their learning.

2: Exam weighted 40%
One hour written exam
One hour written exam consisting of 50 single-best answer questions covering material from the entire module. Questions will include a mixture of text-only stems and image interpretation. Students will be provided with formative material as part of their self-study and also sit a formative examination. Students will receive feedback and support to allow them to identify gaps in their learning.
