Non-native speakers of English only, enrolled on a Keele postgraduate programme and with the approval of the Language Centre.
This module provides non-native English speaking international postgraduate students progressing from ENL-40001 in the first semester further opportunities to strengthen the key written expression, academic and critical thinking skills that are essential to success in their degree studies or research. Particular emphasis will be placed on working with academic source material, developing a clear style of writing and equipping students with a 'toolkit' for avoiding plagiarism in their writing.
Aims
This module will further develop the linguistic, rhetorical and critical competencies of international non-native-English speaking postgraduate students, competencies that are essential for full engagement with their academic discipline and for the communication of original ideas. Particular emphasis will be placed on continued development of students' ability to understand and engage critically with academic texts, make use of academic scholarship in developing and defending their own arguments and produce clear and coherent written work at a level suitable to postgraduate study.

Description of Module Assessment
1: Coursework weighted 80%A series of 5 tasks and assignmentsFive written tasks, comprised of in-class mini-tests and written assignments of up to 500 words, to demonstrate the ability to understand, critically evaluate and select relevant information from academic texts and make use of them to construct clearly written and coherent original work using accepted referencing and citation conventions and an appropriate lexicon and register.
2: Class Participation weighted 20%Participation in class sessionsClass sessions are conducted workshop-style, and preparation for and participation in all class sessions and activities including weekly seminar preparation and revision tasks is essential to achieving the outcomes of the module.
