Description for 2025/26

Is every human born equal in society? How does the UK meet its obligations under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? How can we
monitor and create awareness to strategically intervene in society to ensure schools, universities, businesses, local authorities meet their
obligations? In this module you will learn about strategic interventions and develop your skills as agents of change by using the Human Rights
Tracker to monitor the UK according to a Convention of your choice.

Aims
This module is designed so you may continue your journey as agents of change, drawing upon the transformative methodology to reflect,
understand and engage with local social justice issues in relation to the Sustainability Development Goals, the United Nations Conventions on
Human Rights and Non-governmental mechanisms for monitoring state commitment to social justice.
You will develop research skills to inform a range of individual and collaborative strategic interventions for social justice; to
research and draft a Parallel Report for the UN monitoring committees, and to create a rights awareness digital project to disseminate the key
recommendations of the Parallel Report to charitable, educational and business partners.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Apply a range of social justice resources from community groups, non-governmental organisations, the government's policy materials and the United Nations monitoring mechanisms to their social justice project: 2
Explain the intersectionality of social justice issues by exploring a range of feminist, decolonial and queer literature.: 1,2
Apply a range of digital tools to assess which digital medium may best impact different user groups and multi-agency stake holders: 2
Design and deliver a collaborative social justice project, drawing upon the interdisciplinarity of their peers to apply to the societal and workplace context: 2

Study hours

32 hours in-class active learning sessions, including timetabled group work sessions in Semester 2
75 hours group work (~ 3 hrs per week) including structured group learning activities and preparation of group assessment

Description of Module Assessment

1: Reflective Diary weighted 40%
Reflective Log
The students will prepare a reflective diary on researching the parallel report and engaging with the community organisations to reflect upon the issues that the communities are facing in relation to the human rights provisions. Word count 1000 words.

2: Group Assessment weighted 60%
Rights Awareness Project
The students will work collaboratively to produce a 'Rights Awareness Project', to disseminate the key findings and recommendations of a Parallel Report to create digital resources for community organisations, businesses and schools. Equivalent of 1500 words. Group size 4-6 students
