How do wars, climate change, poverty and political instability influence global health? How can we develop solutions to reducing global health issues and inequalities? In this module you will learn about how we can use data and evidence-based research to develop interventions and propose solutions to improving the quality of life. You will work collaboratively to propose new strategies to reduce global health inequalities, developing skills in leadership, teamwork, problem-solving and communication in the process.
Aims
Building on knowledge and skills developed in year one, the aims of this module are for students to develop the ability to create solutions for global health challenges and the knowledge of how to use research methods to evaluate the succuss of their proposals.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Evaluate a range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies used to do research and guide interventions to improve global health and reduce health inequalities (with links to UN’s Sustainable Development Goals), with ethical principles.: 1Acquire basic knowledge of international health organizations and their contribution and analyse and relate global health systems for population health: 1Demonstrate the application of evidence to analyse and evaluate health interventions and the role of a range of stakeholders to reduce global burden of disease: 1Develop skills to communicate with lay audiences to encourage participation in projects aimed at improving health: 2
32 hours in-class active learning sessions, including timetabled group work sessions in Semester 275 hours group work (~ 3 hrs per week) including structured group learning activities and preparation of group assessment [for L6 modules add in: “level-6 showcase event”]43 hours independent study including preparation for independent assessment
Description of Module Assessment
1: Research Proposal weighted 40%A 2,500 word research proposal to answer a global health challenge of your choiceStudents will write a 2,500 research proposal that aims to answer a global health challenge of their choice.
The assignment will consists of 6 sections:
i. Background to the global health challenge of choice
ii. Aims and research question for the proposed research
iii. The rationale for the proposed research methodology
iv. A description of the proposed project (including the role of ethics)
v. An outline of the potential impact and outcomes of the research
2: Group Assessment weighted 60%Group presentation encouraging others to participate in a projectThe module will include workshops in which students will work in groups (3-5 students) to identify ways to engage with people, communities and organisations for projects that focus on reducing health inequalities. Students will then develop a presentation that can be focused at individuals/populations or organisations to encourage their participation in the project; this may be one project proposed in assessment one by a group member. The presentation should last for 20 minutes and there will be 5 minutes for questions.
