Description for 2023/24

This module dovetails mathematics and physics: Mathematics is taught with examples from physics, and physical understanding is gained from mathematical modelling. The module also teaches the basic tools of error analysis and thus supports students with their laboratory work.

Aims
Develop and illustrate mathematical and statistical concepts through physical examples.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Class Test weighted 20%
Unseen one-hour class test at the end of semester 1
Class test to examine all material taught in semester 1

2: Problem Sheets weighted 20%
Problem sheets
Two assessed problem sheets per semester, to be solved by students individually

3: Open Book Examination weighted 60%
Unseen two-hour exam at the end of semester 2
Unseen two-hour exam at the end of semester 2, will test all module material of semesters 1 and 2. Exam paper has two sections: Section A - 10 short questions with total marks 40/100; Section B - choice of 2 out of 4 long questions worth 60/100 marks.
