Description for 2023/24

You will learn about different techniques that allow astronomers to measure and characterise the Universe. Such techniques include those used in measuring the distance, temperature and brightness of stars, galaxy classification and basic history of the Universe. You will apply familiar physical laws to describe the internal structure and evolution of stars similar to the Sun. You will also develop an understanding of how stars form in the local Universe. In the practical sessions you will learn how to do astronomical observations, and communicate science with a variety of audiences.

Aims
To help students to understand the basics of astronomy and the measurable universe, and stellar structure. To develop the transferable, practical and communication skills that are required by the practising astrophysicist.

Talis Aspire Reading List
Any reading lists will be provided by the start of the course.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Portfolio weighted 40%
Astronomical practicum
Documentation in electronic format of the practical work carried out and presented (set in the context of Astronomy topics discussed in the lectures), including a critical reflection of the different types of activities.

2: Problem Sheets weighted 10%
Problem Sheets
Three assessed problem sheets; indicative length is 4 short exercises for each sheet; these consist of practical application of concepts and techniques to enhance learning.

3: Exam weighted 40%
Two-hour unseen examination
Exam paper has three sections: Section A - 10 short questions with total marks 40/100; Section B - choice of 1 out of 2 long questions worth 30/100 marks; Section C - choice of 1 out of 2 long questions worth 30/100 marks.

4: Tutorial weighted 10%
Problem classes
Tutor-moderated classes in which students complete assignments relevant to the module. Assessment is based on tutor observation of students' problem solving skills and progress during timetabled sessions.
