Description for 2023/24

This module enables you to apply fundamentals of nursing care and develop their communication and reflective skills in a clinical practice setting related to your field of practice and in simulated placement learning. Students are supported by a practice supervisor, practice assessor and academic assessor.

Aims
to:
introduce you to your chosen field of clinical nursing practice and develop clinical nursing practice knowledge, skills and professional values in your first year.
- Learn and practise clinical skills in a simulated environment and apply to practice settings.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate safe, effective, compassionate, evidence-based nursing practice in a clinical setting in accordance with the NMC Code (2018) through successful completion of remaining practice proficiencies within the practice assessment document with a focus on fundamentals of nursing practice: 1

Study hours

Breakdown of active learning hours-
In situ- 34hrs (Lectures, seminars, tutorial, workshops, practical classes, assessment preparation and simulation)
Synchronous- 10hrs (Lectures, tutorials)
Asynchronous - 40hrs (Guided independent study including preparation for scheduled sessions, follow up work)
Placement learning hours- 300hrs
Independent study hours - 216hrs (Wider reading, revision, assessment preparation)

Description of Module Assessment

1: Coursework weighted 0%
Assessment of proficiencies including professional values and medicines management
Assessment of all professional values and assessment of remaining practice learning outcomes from the practice proficiencies within the Midlands Yorkshire & East Practice Assessment Document (MYEPAD). Students will have professional values summatively assessed at the end of the placement, when they are required to achieve all professional values. The students will liaise with their practice supervisors/ practice assessors to ensure all proficiencies are achieved during the clinical placement (with exception: starred proficiencies can be completed in Part 2 or Part 3). Medicines management must be achieved by the end of final summative placement.

2: Practice Based Assessment weighted 25%
A 30 minute episode of care
A 30 minute episode of care assessment in the clinical practice setting for this module where the student demonstrates competence in a defined set of knowledge, skills and behaviours in meeting the needs of a service user in their field of nursing, including accurate assessment of needs, supportive management, health promotion, knowledge of safeguarding, and demonstration of professional values
