MAN-10015 Accounting Principles MAN- 10024 Financial Accounting
This module builds on the knowledge acquired in the two prior accounting modules: Accounting Principles and Financial and Management Accounting. It is designed as an intermediate study of financial accounting considering international financial reporting. The module provides students with the knowledge and skills to help them apply current accounting standards, and critically appraise the underlying concepts and financial reporting methods. This module uses a combination of lectures and tutorials and formative and summative assessments to develop a range of transferable abilities and skills: reflective, critical and analytic abilities, essay writing, problem solving and accounting research skills. Students who are awarded a degree in the areas of accounting and finance will have acquired skills relevant to developing a successful career in accounting, finance or financial management.
Aims
The aims of this module are:To describe and explain key elements of International Accounting Standards as they apply to listed companies in the UK.To discuss some key differences between International Accounting Standards and UK GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).To introduce measurement models and the conceptual framework adopted by the International Accounting Standard Board (IASB) for financial reporting regulation.To explain the UK's and the IASB's regulatory frameworks for financial reporting.To explore the role of accounting in the broad social and political context.To provide adequate knowledge and skills to obtain exemptions from the syllabus of the chartered accounting bodies (ACCA and CIMA).The concepts and skills that will be developed during the module include both applied and theoretical. The primary emphasis, however, will be on applications of financial reporting regulations. The module creates the basis for Advanced Financial Accounting taught in year 3. The module will also provide transferable skills.

Description of Module Assessment
1: Class Test weighted 30%1.5 hours computer- based test (mid-term assessment) based on problem solving and numerical exercisesThe problem solving and numerical exercises will typically require students to appropriately record financial transactions and describe and justify the use of relevant accounting techniques, as well as discuss the limitations of the techniques employed.
2: Unseen Exam weighted 70%2 hour in situ final examAssessment 2 is an unseen closed book exam which will be in situ under exam conditions and following the university's regulations. The examination will cover the whole syllabus. The questions will cover essay questions, problem-solving questions and numerical calculations.
