Description for 2020/21

The aim of this module is to enable students to understand factors that influence image quality in plain radiography and to prepare students to systematically evaluate the outcome of plain radiographic examinations using appropriate strategies.

Aims
The aim of this module is to enable students to understand factors that influence image quality in plain radiography and to prepare students to evaluate systematically the output of plain radiographic examinations using appropriate strategies.

Intended Learning Outcomes

demonstrate the ability to assess systematically the technical quality of plain radiographic images will be achieved by assessments: 1,2,3,4
describe how to improve radiographic image quality as required and when appropriate will be achieved by assessments: 1,2,3,4
begin to clinically evaluate simple plain radiographic examinations; will be achieved by assessments: 1,2,3,4
identify normal radiographic anatomy on plain images; will be achieved by assessments: 2,3,4
apply appropriate radiographic image searching strategies. will be achieved by assessments: 2,3,4

Study hours

This will include lectures, seminars, practical and image-viewing sessions with guided study where appropriate, using a blended learning approach.
Students will continue their learning while on practice experience placements via guided independent study, so theoretical concepts and knowledge can be applied.
Formative assessments will enable students to monitor their own learning.
It is anticipated that approximately 63 hours of practice experience will be derived from a total of 375 hours, averaged across all six assessed modules in year 1.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Exam weighted 100%
A 2 hour image based short answer examination
A 2 hour examination made up of two sections. Section A: questions relating to radiographic practice underpinning image interpretation. Section B: image based questions to test student ability to systematically evaluate the outcome of plain radiographic examinations and knowledge of factors influencing plain film image quality.

2: Portfolio weighted 0%
Portfolio B: Radiographic Competency
Assesses those aspects of student competency mapped against the intended learning outcomes of this module: with reference to assessment of specific radiographic practice competencies undertaken during Practice Experience.

3: Portfolio weighted 0%
Portfolio C: Clinical Assessment Competency
Assesses those aspects of student competency mapped against the intended learning outcomes of this module: with reference to the six mandatory clinical assessments undertaken during Practice Experience.

4: Portfolio weighted 0%
Portfolio E: Oral Examination 40 mins
Assesses those aspects of student knowledge and application mapped against the intended learning outcomes of this module: with reference to all appendicular imaging undertaken by the student during Practice Experience.
