Description for 2020/21

This module forms part of the BSc(Hons) Rehabilitation Science programme at Keele University, an innovative, integrated programme which prepares the graduate for further study or employment in a health and social care setting.
It offers students an opportunity to build on knowledge and skills gained from Years 1 and 2 of the programme. Students will enhance their understanding of the integration of physical and psychosocial rehabilitation strategies. Students will explore the integration of behaviour change and physical activity and exercise prescription in common global conditions.
The programme reflects the shifting emphasis away from increasing the quantity of care available towards enhancing the quality of care, moving away from a medical disease model towards a health model based on personal responsibility and prevention of disease.

Aims
To explore the integration of the physical and psychosocial aspects of rehabilitation including:
- Medical, therapeutic and pharmacological management.
- Principles of behaviour change.
- Physical activity and exercise prescription.
- Assistive technologies.
The module builds on knowledge relating to behaviour change and physical activity and exercise prescription and places these strategies in the context of the rehabilitation of common global conditions.

Intended Learning Outcomes

critically discuss, with reference to current evidence (research/guidelines), strategies used to meet health and wellbeing needs of common global conditions;: 1,

critically evaluate the potential limitations to physical activity and exercise in particular populations (e.g. older adult; those with learning difficulties) and the strategies used to promote activity in these groups;: 1,

critically evaluate, with reference to the underlying pathology and patho-physiology, the limitations to physical activity and exercise in disabling conditions and the strategies used to promote activity in these groups;: 1,

critically evaluate the relative importance of behaviour change and physical activity and exercise prescription in rehabilitation.: 1,

30 contact hours which may include lectures, workshops, tutorials etc including six hours for assessment preparation.

School Rules

Successful completion of a minimum of 105 credits of the BSc (Hons) Rehabilitation Science at Level 5, normally at Keele University.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Essay weighted 100%
2000 word essay relating to the module content
Students will submit a focussed essay exploring the integration of physical and psychosocial strategies in the rehabilitation of a common global condition. Students will consider the relative importance of specific rehabilitation approaches in their chosen condition.
