Description for 2020/21

The Evidence Based Health and Rehabilitation module builds on content introduced in Year 1 of the MSci Physiotherapy and BSc Hons Rehabilitation and Exercise Science programmes and enables the student to critically appraise literature relevant to practice.
Students will have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required to assess quality of research methodology both qualitative and quantitative and understand common statistical terminology used for evidence based research.
The module aims to prepare the student to integrate research into clinical practice whilst also developing transferable skills (such as academic writing, presentation of an argument, critical appraisal) that can be applied in a variety of healthcare settings and specialities.

Aims
To:-
introduce the concept of using evidence to support best practice,
demonstrate the need for critical reading, thinking and writing,
develop the students' knowledge and understanding of research principles,
enable students to effectively compare and evaluate findings from health related research.

Intended Learning Outcomes

debate the strengths and weaknesses of various sources of evidence related to health care: 2
select appropriate study designs for a range of applied and clinical questions related to health and rehabilitation: 2
extract and summarise key information from research articles: 2
compare the findings and quality of evidence from research articles: 2
formulate effective search strategies to identify best evidence using health related databases: 1

Study hours

30 tutor led hours which may include lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials and two hours of assessment preparation classes etc.
120 hours of independent study including 20 hours of guided independent study.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Computer Task weighted 30%
Computer based task of 40 minutes duration
The student's knowledge and skill in retrieving research evidence from an electronic database to inform a specific clinical or applied question will be explored.

2: Report weighted 70%
1500 word written report
Two abstracts will be produced from simulated full text articles. The information will be compared and critically evaluated.
