Description for 2020/21

This module forms a mandatory part of the overall BSc Midwifery programme. This module will be undertaken within the first year of study. This module focuses on the evolving role of the midwife within the current context of society including an overview of specific vulnerable groups in society and explores the increased medicalisation of childbirth. There is a focus upon the art and science within the midwifery discipline. As part of this module students will be involved in creating a artistic project that will focus on the childbearing continuum.

There is a focus upon the art and science of midwifery practice as depicted in the 21st century.

Intended Learning Outcomes

demonstrate knowledge of the role and scope of the midwife in the 21st Century, with regards to The NMC Code (2018) and other relevant legislation and frameworks considering the need for effective documentation: 1
discuss the need to work sensitively and inclusively and develop recognition for diversity and differences in approaches to care: 1
discuss factors which may impact women and their families including socio-cultural influences, health inequalities, human rights of women and newborn infants, including women¿s sexual and reproductive rights: 1
demonstrate awareness of the emotional context of midwifery for the woman and her family and the impact on the student midwife: 2
gather information and data from a range of resources including media and the arts, which influences current midwifery practice: 2
recognise professional and ethical implications that may arise in contemporaneous midwifery practice and the impact on the woman, her family and the health professional team: 2

Study hours

This module will comprise of 75hrs of scheduled learning via either face-to-face, online or group work sessions, 225hrs of independent study comprising 100 hours directed study related to module content and 125 hrs self directed and assessment preparation.
