MAT-20004 Complex Variable I and Vector Calculus;MAT-20035 Exploring Algebra and Analysis
This module extends Level 5 Complex Variable considering further applications of contour integration and the Residue Theorem. The module then provides an introduction to conformal mappings, together with some of their applications, in particular, their application in determining harmonic functions in two-dimensional regions. The module also covers certain analytical aspects of complex functions.
Aims
The aim of this module is, firstly, to study further applications of contour integration and the Residue Theorem and, secondly, to provide an introduction to conformal mappings and their applications.
Intended Learning Outcomes
evaluate a range of complex variable techniques, then select and apply these techniques to solve problems in complex variables: 1,2prove theorems in complex variables and apply these theorems to a range of situations: 1,2appraise problems involving complex variables, make judgements on appropriate approaches to these problems, select and then apply appropriate concepts and theory to¿ solve these problems: 1,2

Description of Module Assessment
1: Portfolio weighted 20%Portfolio of work created over the semesterA portfolio of work created over the semester through 8 short exercises (equally weighted). The exercises, ¿when combined, form a portfolio of work that develops students' ability to use module concepts, theory and solve mathematical problems.
Over the semester, students can expect to spend a total of 30 hours creating their portfolio.
2: Open Book Examination weighted 80%Online examinationOnline 2-hour end of module examination.
