Mathematics provides a language to discuss concepts and ideas in a formal setting. It is thus vital to develop the ability to reason logically and to recognise incorrect reasoning. This module will extend a range of mathematical skills and techniques and apply them in more difficult unstructured problems, using mathematics as an effective means of communication. The module will develop skills in reading and comprehending mathematical arguments and and improve confidence and speed in finding correct solutions. By the end of the module students will take increasing responsibility for their own learning and the evaluation of their own mathematical development.
Aims
This module gives a self-contained and intensive summary of the essential methods and techniques required for mathematics programmes. Students will acquire a sound foundation in those methods and techniques that they should have at their fingertips¿.
Intended Learning Outcomes
apply mathematical methods and techniques involving functions, calculus, trigonometry and algebra: 1,2construct rigorous mathematical arguments through use of precise statements, logical deduction and inference and by the manipulation of mathematical expressions: 2select and apply their knowledge of mathematical methods, concepts and techniques in a variety of contexts: 1,2
Classes: 33 hours.Preparation for classes, class tests and independent study: 117 hours.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Online Tasks weighted 20%Online assessmentAn online set of tasks/questions using Maple TA or equivalent, applying mathematical methods, concepts and techniques.
2: Online Tasks weighted 80%Class testEnd of module class test. The class test covers the entire module content testing the ability to select and apply appropriate methods and techniques to solve problems.
