Description for 2020/21

This module will enable you to gain a broad introduction to the field of cancer biology. The module will explore the molecular and cellular hallmarks of cancer and how the understanding of these hallmarks is beginning to inform therapeutic development. The module will discuss tumour suppressor genes and oncogenes, and the molecular biology of cancer detection and diagnostics. You will be introduced to the latest developments in basic cancer research and the impact of molecular biology on developing cancer therapies.

Aims

This module aims to provide students with current knowledge and understanding of the biology of cancer and how this knowledge can be applied to clinical benefit in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The module will focus on the hallmarks of cancer, which define the biological capabilities acquired by cells during the multi-step development of human malignant tumours. The module will also discuss the therapeutic targeting of these hallmarks and the drugs that interfere with each of these hallmarks. Latest developments in basic cancer research and the impact of molecular biology on developing cancer therapies will be explored.

Literature Review
The literature review titles will be released in week 10. Reviews will be uploaded to Turnitin. Guidance around expected word count will be provided. Students will be given the review titles during the final week of teaching. They are expected to integrate in their answers current knowledge obtained throughout the module.
